P25 Phase 2 (TDMA)

Tait Communications is building on its proven and successful track record of delivering P25 digital solutions by adding P25 Phase 2 (P25 TDMA) capable solutions to its portfolio. The products within the P25 Phase 2 range have TDMA hardware, which can be software upgraded to full Phase 2 operation, when public safety agencies begin to require this capability.

Introduction

Some public safety agencies have an evolving need for the benefits delivered by P25 Phase 2 (P25 TDMA) systems and products. Few public safety agencies require the ability to operate in P25 Phase 2 mode today, but many require the capability of doing so in the future. To meet this requirement, Tait is adding the new 9400 P25 Phase 2 capable series to the existing P25 family of systems and product offerings. The 9400 series will enable public safety agencies to control the transition to full P25 Phase 2 operation – allowing mitigation of risks and management of the timing of the transition.

The Tait 9400 series offering will evolve over time to evolving needs of public safety agencies for P25 Phase 2. The TB9400 base station is available for order now in the 700/800MHz band, and the TM9400 mobile and TP9400 portable will be available shortly. The 9400 series provides TDMA hardware, and as public safety agencies develop the need for full Phase 2 operation, Tait will make available the Phase 2 software to allow this. P25 Phase 2 does not obsolete P25 Phase 1 and the Tait 9400 series augments the existing Tait 9100 series.

Public safety agencies likely to have a need for systems capable of operating in Phase 2 are those:

  • in the United States of America operating in the 700 MHz band. These agencies have an FCC requirement to be operating in 6.25 KHz channels (P25 Phase 2) by January 01, 2017
  • with a capacity-limited radio system, due to spectral congestion, and difficulty in acquiring sufficient channels to deliver the required capacity
  • looking to future proof their radio system by ensuring that they can take advantage of the benefits of Phase 2 at some future point in the radio system's lifetime

The scope, benefits, and public safety needs around P25 Phase 2 were discussed at a recent roundtable event sponsored by Tait.
