Location services

The market-leading DMR Tier 3 platform from Tait provides a unique blend of voice and AVL, protecting mission-critical voice performance while offering AVL data to enhance business efficiency and safety.

AVL for improved worker safety and efficiency

Radio systems with GPS data integrated have the capacity to save lives and enhance utility operations. Support for AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) and telemetry data is inherent in the DMR standard, enabling vehicles to transmit location data via radio back to base and enhance fleet visibility. Operational management can then make more informed and efficient decisions, leading to better distribution grid performance and improved worker safety.

Tait DMR has industry-leading support for AVL data built in. AVL data from mobile and portable radios can be collected via event-driven messages and sent to the management system to provide location information. A "polling" regime can also be activated to gather and send locations from individual mobile radios as required.

Mobile radios can be programmed to "push" location data based on events, while the central management system can also send a “pull” query to request location information from one or more radios.

A suitable management system application will employ a balance of both push and pull AVL data updates, which help to achieve a useful and dynamic picture of the state of the fleet.
Tait DMR Tier 3 is the system based on the DMR standard that exceeds the combined "push and pull" AVL capability.

Balancing voice and AVL needs

Reaching the right balance between voice and data access and capacity is a common issue in radio communications. Voice call access remains vital and often business-critical, however access for AVL data is becoming more important and requires sufficient bandwidth to be effective. The voice-AVL balance is particularly difficult to achieve during emergencies such as natural disasters or weather events, when voice traffic fully occupies the limited channel capacity.

The Tait solution uses techniques such as data compression, optimizing message paths and minimizing delays to maintain high levels of voice call capacity while still leaving available bandwidth to deliver critical location updates. The Tait DMR Tier 3 trunked network maintains an optimal balance between voice and AVL updates, even during emergencies when both can be critical to the event.

During an emergency call, the speaker’s location is often very important – particularly if they are requesting help or describing a problem. The Tait DMR Tier 3 terminal can add the speakers’ location data and any relevant telemetry data from their vehicle or portable onto their transmission. This up-to-date AVL information dramatically enhances efficiency and can save lives.

Telemetry provides a greater operational view

Tait DMR Tier 3 supports vehicle and device telemetry, a significant step forward to providing a richer and more informative view of the fleet and operational environment.

With this platform utilities can gather a range of telemetry data from their fleet, such as if a truck engine is running, or if the bucket is up on a bucket truck. When combined with the vehicle's location, such information can significantly enhance the operational view.

Tait DMR Tier 3 supports many telemetry data types including telemetry gathered from portable radios. These new data sources are key to building an efficient, digital radio connected enterprise.

Tait DMR Tier 3 is the no compromise digital radio platform for AVL data.
