Summer Internship : IoT Platform Evolution: Embedded System focus (Project 2 of 2)

The goal of this project is to integrate a cellular modem into a Tait mobile radio. The mobile radio is from the Unify Vehicle product range and has a Linux OS environment. The cellular module will connect to the Linux OS and be managed under that environment.

Tait develop solutions and applications for the mission critical market. In recent years new products with expanded capabilities have been introduced into this market. The expanded capabilities include the ability to unify different communications bearers, support multiple sensor arrays and the introduction of enhanced processing platforms for the creation of sophisticated applications such as workforce management, asset management and worker safety.

You will be joining the Tait R&T team who are both working on the integration of a cellular modem into a vehicle mounted radio and the development of applications associated with worker safety and management.

Your role will have a hardware and firmware focus; you will be responsible for integrating a 3rd party cellular module into the mobiles Linux based hardware environment. This integrated platform will be used for supporting a workforce application being developed by another intern. After the hardware integration phase you will be working with this intern to integrate their application onto this platform.

Mentoring and support will be given throughout the internship.

The candidate will have experience in the following:

  • Hardware engineering (mostly digital but also some analog and power supplies);
  • Linux (including some experience with debugging drivers);
  • An understanding of USB, ethernet and serial communications.

Eligible Interns:

To be eligible for a placement, students must:

  • Have completed their penultimate or final year of an undergraduate or honours degree, a postgraduate diploma or certificate, or co-joint undergraduate degrees;
  • Be studying science, technology, engineering, design or business at a New Zealand university or tertiary institute;
  • Be a New Zealand citizen or resident or hold a relevant visa;
  • Not have been previously employed at the business or in the industry under a professional arrangement.
